Climate, Seasons and Safety | September to November

Autumn

The mildest season, shorter days, school traffic, slippery leaves and flu shots.

4 minute read

Autumn is the easiest season to manage. The air turns crisp, the leaves change colour and most days are comfortable. Mornings and evenings are cool while afternoons stay warm, so layers work well again.

  • Days get shorter quickly. Wear something reflective if you walk or cycle after dark.
  • Schools are back in session. Watch for school zones and always stop for a school bus showing flashing red lights.
  • Wet fallen leaves are slippery on sidewalks and roads.
  • Halloween on the thirty first of October means children out after dark. Give them reflective clothing or a flashlight.
  • Book a heating check, replace emergency kit supplies and prepare the car before cold weather arrives.
  • Buy winter clothing early and check that boots still fit growing children.
  • Ask a pharmacy or clinic about seasonal flu vaccination and current respiratory illness guidance.

Prepare for shorter days

Rain, wet leaves and earlier darkness can make walking, cycling and driving harder. Use lights and reflective clothing, slow down near school zones and keep walkways clear of slippery leaves.
