Your first weeks in Ontario
There is a lot to do and no single right order. This is the order that works for most people. Do what you can, and ask a settlement worker for help with the rest.
Before you begin
Keep a folder for your passport, immigration documents, proof of address, birth certificates, marriage documents if relevant, education and employment records, vaccination records, medication list, and copies of applications and confirmation numbers.
If you do not have all of these documents, do not worry. A settlement worker can help you understand what you actually need.

Week one
Documents and money
- Apply for a Social Insurance Number at a Service Canada office. You need it to work and to open some accounts.
- Open a bank account. Most banks have newcomer packages with no monthly fee for the first year.
- Apply for an OHIP health card at a ServiceOntario centre as soon as you have an address.
- Register with a settlement agency near you. Their help is free and they can do much of this with you.
- 2
Week two
Somewhere to live
- Decide on a budget that includes rent, utilities, insurance and transit.
- Search listings, view units in person and never send money for a home you have not seen.
- Read the standard lease before you sign, and keep your copy.
- Apply for subsidized housing even if you have a place, because waiting lists are long.
- 3
Week three
Health and school
- Register with Health Care Connect to be matched with a family doctor.
- Register children at the local school board office with proof of address and immigration status.
- Bring vaccination records to your public health unit so a nurse can tell you what is missing.
- Save 811 for health advice and 988 for crisis support.
- 4
Week four
Work and language
- Visit an Employment Ontario centre for free resume and interview help.
- Start a credential evaluation if your profession needs one, because it takes weeks.
- Ask about bridge training programs and free workplace language classes in your field.
- Take a free language assessment if you want government funded English classes.

Before the season changes
Get ready for the weather
- Buy a proper winter coat and boots in autumn, before prices rise.
- Learn the signs of frostbite and where the nearest warming centre is.
- Build a small emergency kit at home, one item at a time.
- Get a free flu shot in October at any pharmacy.
Things that can take longer than expected
- Finding a family doctor or a specialist appointment
- Subsidized housing and childcare
- Professional licensing and credential assessment
You do not need to complete everything in your first month.
Who can help me?
