A family doctor, also called a primary care provider, is the person who knows your history, renews your prescriptions and refers you to specialists. In Ontario you usually cannot see a specialist without a referral.
How to find one

- 2Call clinics in your neighbourhood and ask directly whether they are accepting patients.
- 3Ask a settlement worker, since agencies often know which local practices welcome newcomers.
- 4Use a community health centre, where a team of doctors, nurses and counsellors works together.

After a clinic accepts you
The clinic may ask you to register, describe your health history and book a first appointment. Ask how previous medical records can be sent. Bring your health card, medication and allergy lists, vaccination records, available medical information and questions you want to discuss.
How referrals work
A family doctor or nurse practitioner sends information to a specialist when that type of care is needed. The specialist office may contact you later with an appointment. Ask who to call if you do not hear back within the expected time.
Waiting lists for a family doctor can be long in some cities. While you wait, use walk in clinics and keep copies of any test results so your future doctor has your history.
