Moving countries is one of the most stressful things a person can do. Feeling anxious, low or homesick is common and it does not mean anything is wrong with you. Support exists and asking for it will not affect your immigration status.

Where to find ongoing help
- Your family doctor, who can refer you to a psychiatrist covered by OHIP.
- Community health centres, which often have counsellors on staff at no cost.
- Settlement agencies, many of which run newcomer support groups and one on one counselling.
- Employee assistance programs, if your workplace offers one.
- Structured programs of guided therapy offered free through Ontario health services.
Who does what
- Psychiatrist: a medical doctor who diagnoses mental illnesses and can prescribe medication.
- Psychologist: provides psychological assessment and therapy. Coverage varies.
- Psychotherapist or counsellor: provides talk therapy and support. Coverage varies.
- Family doctor: assesses many common concerns, can prescribe medication and may refer to specialists.
- Social worker: may provide counselling, practical support and help with social needs.
How do I see a psychiatrist
For publicly funded care, begin with a family doctor, nurse practitioner or another service that can assess you and make a referral. Ask what the expected wait is and what support is available while you wait.
If therapy costs too much
Ask about public programs, community health centres, settlement agencies, employee assistance programs, school or campus supports and community organizations. You can ask about language, interpretation, cultural experience, gender preferences and accessibility needs.
