OHIP covers doctors and hospitals. It does not usually cover medication you take at home, dental care, eyeglasses, physiotherapy outside a hospital or ambulance transport.
Help with medication costs
- Employer benefit plans, if your job offers them, cover a share of prescription costs for you and your family.
- OHIP plus covers many prescriptions at no cost for people under twenty five who do not have a private plan.
- The Ontario Drug Benefit covers people sixty five and older and people receiving social assistance.
- The Trillium Drug Program helps households whose drug costs are high compared with their income.
Dental and vision
Public dental programs exist for children in low income families, for seniors and through some public health units. Ask your local public health unit what is available in your city. Eye exams are covered by OHIP for children and for older adults, and for anyone with certain medical conditions.
Other services and devices
Coverage for physiotherapy, ambulance services, vision care and medical devices depends on the service and your eligibility. Employer insurance may pay part of a cost. The Canadian Dental Care Plan may help eligible people who do not have access to private dental insurance.
